Featured Poem Special!: The Queen from Manila

For starters, the title of this poem is not really "The Queen from Manila". I just had to put a title there and didn't know what else to use since the author didn't post a title herself. As for the author, it's our very own Queen of Poetry: Amal Algahmi! :D Amal wrote a hilarious and very witty limerick in the fall of 2009, which she says was her "limerick phase". I thought it was so amazing that I had to share it on our blog! It's great to see LEP members writing their own poetry. If YOU have a poem you'd like us to feature, just send it in! :) Our email is umdlep@gmail.com.

And now, without further ado, Amal's limerick:

There was a young queen from Manila
who demanded a furry chinchilla;
but at the last second,
her pet-buyer she beckoned,
and asked him instead for Godzilla.

How fantastic! :D I have to say though, I'd probably prefer a chinchilla over Godzilla...

Hats off to our Queen of Poetry! And Amal, if you're reading this and would like to title your limerick, just let me know! ^_^

Poppyseed Muffins

Hey everyone!

So the other day LEP's Countess of Expression mentioned "poppy" as the necessary ingredient in something the LEP is cooking up (not literally). After staring at the word "poppy", I realized I had absolutely no idea what she meant. I've heard of lemon poppyseed muffins of course (who hasn't?) but what IS a poppyseed and what's a poppy flower in the first place?

It turns out that poppyseeds are obtained from the Opium Poppy, which, interestingly enough, is also the flower which contributes to the making of morphine and heroin. The poppy flower is harmless enough in appearance although it does tend to stand out when in bloom. So what does this have to do with poetry? Because there are TONS of poems about the poppy flower! :D One particular poem is written by Jane Taylor, and is called "The Poppy":

High on a bright and sunny bed
A scarlet poppy grew
And up it held its staring head,
And thrust it in full view.

Yet no attention did it win,
By all these efforts made,
And less unwelcome had it been
In some retired shade.

Although within its scarlet breast
No sweet perfume was found,
It seemed to think itself the best
Of all the flowers round.

From this I may a hint obtain
And take great care indeed,
Lest I appear as pert and vain
As does this gaudy weed.

Love it! :D What do YOU think about poppy's, poppyseeds, and poppyseed muffins? Leave us a comment!
