Picnic Poetry (no, I didn't write that wrong)

Hey everybody! :D So as I'm sure you ALL already know, the LEP's end-of-the-year bash is coming up: POETRY PICNIC!!!! We plan to make this an annual event, but this is our very first time so we intend to make a major impact on the campus community with all the awesomeness that this event will bring. Counting today, there are 11 days left until we officially "Poetry Picnic"! I thought I'd use this blog post to celebrate poetry related to picnics- after all, who doesn't love picnics? There's something innately fascinating about sitting outside in beautiful weather with people you adore and...stuffing your face. No, really, there is. ^_^

This particular poem actually doesn't have a title but I thought it was great! It's by Carol Gioia. :)

Pack the picnic basket

with all the foods we love,

take along a frisbee,

a baseball, bat and glove.

Bring a blanket to sit upon,

bug spray, and sunscreen, too,

get the kids into the car

with the dog, and me and you

Finally we are on our way

to have a day of fun,

searching for the perfect spot

to frolic in the sun.

A grassy knoll and shade tree

beside a lazy creek;

pull over, this looks just right

for a picnic quite unique.

Setting up a lavish feast,

joy we can't contain,

our happiness is dampened

when it begins to rain.

Good thing that LEP's picnic is indoors! :D No worries of rain or bugs or grass stains or the wind blowing your paper plate away (happens to me ALL the time) to worry about. Instead, we're recreating the fun of a picnic indoors AND with poetry! So be there or be square! Thursday, April 5th from 11 am- 3 pm in Kochoff Hall!

Love is in the air ♥ :)

Yes, friends. Love is in the air, and you can probably smell it.

To celebrate all the love that's floating around in the atmosphere, Lyceum and the League have teamed up to bring you Love is in the Air! A Valentine's Day Poetry and Story Slam. It's a chance for you to let out all of your pent up thoughts and feelings about love - the good, the bad, and the ugly; the romantic, the brotherly, and the motherly. All kinds of love. If you want to be a poet slammer, email us to reserve a spot! If you'd like to be a story slammer, email Lyceum! Looking forward to seeing you all there! And while you're in the UC, be sure to stop by the UC stage and buy some flowers to support the UM Dearborn students going all over the country during their Alternative Spring Break!

The last time I celebrated Valentine's Day was in . . . elementary school?

Those were the days when all of my classmates decorated "mailboxes" that would go out on the desks during the class Valentine's day party. On that day, the teacher would likely start off with a lot of fun Valentine's day activities. Then we'd probably have a party at the end of the day, when all the kids would go around stuffing the mailboxes with cards and treats. Usually, we'd get some little thing from the teacher, like pencils or an eraser or something that everyone would get really excited about, being a kid and all. Of course, your best friends got the biggest valentines, and the teacher most likely did, too. We'd have cookies and candy and cupcakes and drinks while maybe watching a movie or just spending the rest of the day just playing and eating and talking. Pure youthful bliss.

When I was in second grade, my dad took my sisters and I to see Anastasia in  theaters. It was my first movie theater movie, so I was pretty excited. I remember really liking the movie, but the two things that I remember most vividly are, first, that my dad bought us one lone bag of M&Ms as our movie snack food (some of which spilled onto the floor), snd second, that my dad bought my older sister and I each a box of Anastasia Valentine cards the next February. Best. Valentine cards. Ever.

(I actually don't remember the other kinds I'd ever gotten for my class, which must say something about them.)

If you're interested in buying them for someone (*coughmecough*), the only place I found them was on eBay.

Earlier last semester, I watched Anastasia for only the second time in my life. Why I never watched it since that first time will remain an unsolved mystery, but the second time around, I loved it even more. Soon I'll be watching it with my two youngest sisters, and if they don't like it, they'll probably be disowned.

Lepidus Eximius Puncius!

Hi Stalker! 


We're glad that you're here- LEP adores stalkers and offers them cookies. :) So, what is LEP all about? How did we get started? Who's running this crazy band of poets? And what do we have going on in the unknown, blurry, and vague future? Find out in the "Epic Things You Need to Read" section towards the right! ----> 


Now that you know all that, let's move on to more meaty secrets of the League of Extraordinary Poets- like what does "Lepidus Eximius Puncius!" mean anyway? You'll probably see it everywhere anytime LEP is involved. So what does our awesome phrase translate to? If you saw it on our coat of arms during Welcome Week, you probably thought, "Oh, a cool dragon! Whoah...awesome...and...a cup thing, a pen/feather, and...oh, fancy Latin words. Let's just ignore those...."


Well, you were right! They ARE indeed fancy Latin words! (And we do have a cool dragon, we'll admit)


Lepidus = witty
Eximius = excellence/extraordinary
Puncius = our own made up Latin word for "punch". We feel it's imperative to point out that "punchus" was thought of at one point, only to be turned down due to us feeling that that may convey the wrong sentiment. 


So why "punch" at all? You'll have to find out next time. :)
